The sculpture class is wrapping up their first project. For this project students created sculptural narratives using clay and sgraffito techniques. One of their goals was to use symbolism to represent several important life events that have greatly impacted them. Their project and work is inspired by the following artists: Kelly Garrett Rathbone, Beth Tarkington, Kevin Snipes, and Kathy King. During the summer of 2012 I took an amazing class titled, The Pattern Bar: Designing in Glass, as part of Miami University’s Craft Summer Program. Instructor, Sandra Gross, taught us all about how to design and work in glass specifically how to create a pattern bar in glass. I am so excited to finally be able to apply some of these skills into the classroom at UCHS. Last week the Introduction to 3D students completed their very own glass fusing. Students learned about the history of glass, the local Cincinnati Artist Sandra Gross, and became skilled in how to cut and fuse glass. Check out their work in progress. This past Wednesday Art Club hosted this years first art workshop! Members learned about the decorative clay technique called Sgraffito. Sgraffito is a decorating pottery technique achieved by applying layers of color (underglaze) to leather hard clay and then scratching off parts of the underglaze to create a contrasting image, pattern, or texture revealing the clay color underneath. For this workshop members created sets of coasters using this intricate technique.
This week was full of new lessons! Introduction to 3D worked on plaster cast hands inspired by the artist, George Segal. Drawing students wrapped up working on their colored pencil drawn fruit still lives. Introduction to 2D students worked on color theory to create value scales. Last but not least the Painting I students had fun creating ice cream cone still lives to use for their upcoming watercolor project! Check out the excitement in the photographs below!
Last week in Introduction to 2D Art students worked on creating Zentangles! Zentangle is a unique technique to which artists use line and pattern to create purposeful and deliberate strokes that build off of one another and lead to beautiful and intricate outcomes! Check out their work in progress.
